The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, each with their own fears and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, while other scenes depict the main character navigating a desolate church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
