The Gunners' Controversial Partnership Agreement with Visit Rwanda Will Conclude In the Upcoming Season

Arsenal Football Club has confirmed that its much-debated sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda will expire in the coming June.

Background and Scrutiny

The arrangement, estimated to cost around ten million pounds each year, began in 2018 and has since come under fire.

The backlash arises from accusations of Rwandan assistance for the M23 forces in ongoing conflicts in the eastern region of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Earlier this year, Arsenal was accused of committing a disrespectful act to the authorities in Congo by not arranging a meeting with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to discuss the partnership.

Partnership Structure and Objectives

Visit Rwanda functions as an arm of the the country's development agency, which is a government department.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal committed to and maintained this partnership mainly to grow their African supporter base.

Nevertheless, the deal has now ended after both parties “jointly decided” to part ways.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the initial objectives of the partnership – advocating preservation and sustainable tourism, encouraging numerous followers to visit the nation, and building a solid groundwork for tourism growth,” read an official Arsenal statement.

The statement continued that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's objective to emerge as an global sports center in Africa and host more global sporting events while implementing community soccer programs that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches improve their techniques and promote increased engagement in athletics nationwide.

Executive Perspective and Fan Reaction

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's chief executive officer, characterized the deal as a “important voyage” and claimed it had been “advancing” the club's goals.

Yet this view was contested by a segment of the club's followers, with the activist organization Gunners for Peace holding rallies outside the North London venue during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against the French club in late April.

Activists unveiled a banner that read “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and provided wristbands to conceal the partnership emblem on jerseys.

Wider Landscape and Additional Teams

During that period, PSG continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda until 2028.

Simultaneously, Atlético Madrid entered a new agreement for the identical duration that has caused the branding featured on the Spanish club's male and female kits.
